Notes related to Artistic Career

Organized by Fundación Proa with the collaboration of the Estate of Christo V. Javacheff and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Atchugarry; curated by Lorenza Giovanelli. The retrospective exhibition Christo and Jeanne-Claude presents an exhaustive fundamental territory of concepts and images to appreciate the art of the second half of the twentieth century. The appropriation of public property, wrapping monuments and transforming the natural space with their interventions brings us closer to one of the most relevant trends in artistic practice.

Chilean artist Cecilia Vicuña is a recipients of the Golden Lions for Lifetime Achievement of the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia - The Milk of Dreams.

The Museum of Modern Art of Medellín (MAMM) exhibits María Teresa Hincapié. Si este fuera un principio de infinito (María Teresa Hincapié. If this were a principle of infinity), the first institutional exhibition dedicated to the practice of Colombian artist María Teresa Hincapié (Armenia, 1954 – Bogotá, 2008). A pioneer in Colombia and Latin America, Hincapié had a very particular definition of the performative discipline that she used to call “training” and which resisted any specific categorization; rather, it oscillated between life, creation in motion and the search for the sacred.

First gaining attention in the 1960s with his exuberant portraits and landscapes, David Hockney (UK, b. 1937) remains one of the most celebrated British artists of his generation. He is also a key contributor to the development of art in Los Angeles, one of his adopted homes. Drawing upon the Walker’s deep holdings of Hockney’s work, this exhibition presents a broad selection of the artist’s prints, paintings, drawings, and recent digital works.

Celebrating the occasion of her 90th birthday, the exhibition will be on display until February 13, 2022. The aim is to celebrate the life and work of Cuban-born, Miami-based artist Margarita Cano.

Lydia Rubio was born in Havana, Cuba, with art in her bones. She comes from three generations of women painters, to be precise. "My grandmother painted every day, whenever she could," Lydia recalls. "She worked at an office but painted in the living room. The whole family lived together, so I used to see her painting there and was trained visually. My cousin, everybody was drawing and painting, but I was the only one that took it to another level of development and commitment."

The memorial of the Cuban artist Arturo Cuenca Sigarreta (1955-2021), held on the same September 21 as his birth, in the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora, was a symbolic event, surely the first of many that, after his early death, will finally allow the artistic institutions to recognize the visionary character in the work of this unruly and complex creator, who, like few others, embodied a way of criticizing power, both institutional and political, that did not compromise with convenience.

This is the first mid-career survey of Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s work in the United States. Although he has had large-scale retrospectives throughout Europe and Latin America, this exhibition will introduce U.S. audiences to a broad scope of his evolving practice.

Gertrudes Altschul (1904–1962) was a pioneering figure in Brazilian modernist photography. Despite being acknowledged in the field in Brazil, her work is known only in specialized circles, having been scantly published and exhibited—something that this exhibition, the first in a museum, and its publication intend to rectify.

Casa Triângulo exhibits Antonio Henrique Amaral: Pelo Avesso, Antonio Henrique Amaral's first exhibition at the gallery, curated by Pollyana Quintella and Raphael Fonseca. Multiple and polyphonic, Antonio Henrique Amaral (1935 - 2015) endeavored to create a body of work that would resist univocal meanings. His more than six decades of production have drawn a multifaceted path that has been the subject of recent revisions through essays and monographic exhibitions that place the artist beyond his iconic and emblematic Bananas, made between 1968 and 1975.

Olga de Amaral has pioneered her own visual language within the fiber arts movement. Her radical experimentation with color, form, material, composition, and space transforms weaving from a flat design element into an architectural component that defies the confines of any genre or medium.

The first major exhibition on Cuban artist Mariano Rodríguez (1912–90) in the United States, this retrospective features over 140 oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings from leading museum and private collections, including the artist's estate, which has provided unprecedented access to rarely seen works and archives.

Carried out by Casas Riegner in collaboration with the 1Mira Madrid gallery, and curated by Paula Bossa, Respuestas a una época: María Teresa Hincapié 1987- 2006 (Answers to a time) is the first posthumous exhibition held in Colombia that is dedicated to the artistic practice of one of the pioneers of performance in Latin America.

On the artist's centenary, the Ascaso Art Gallery of Caracas will present, together with the Otero-Pardo Foundation, an exhibition entitled “Contemplaciones y Memorias” (Contemplations and Memories), which under the curatorship of Bélgica Rodríguez and the museography of Rafael Santana, brings together a selection of paintings and serigraphs made by the outstanding creator.

The Brazilian artist Regina Silveira has a long career in which she tries to explore different notions of reality through her work with lights, shadows and distortions. In her five decades of artistic work, she has dealt with themes and explored media that tie in with her idea. "I choose the medium that best solves my intentions, and then I look for the skills and technical resources to make the work feasible, focusing on being a non-specialist in any medium." The artist exhibited in Europe and the American continent, much of her work is in public collections such as the Reina Sofía museum.

After concluding her retrospective exhibition at the Miguel Urrutia Art Museum, of the Banco de la República, between October and December 2020, the artist Beatriz González has been invited to participate in the exhibition "Another Energy: Power to Continue Challenging", in the company of 15 women artists of wide range and different nationalities, at the Mori Museum in Tokyo (Japan).
